Pocket MBA concept in a circle with three satellite circles

The Pocket MBA is a powerful resource for executives who want instant access to the subject knowledge, skills and tools that are developed on an MBA degree.

How it works

The Pocket MBA provides eLearning courses, bitesize information and how to guides, all powered by the Fresh Training portal, which is powered by Fresh Unity. This website provides an overview of how the eLearning courses work.  It also has a blog which provides supporting articles that complement the courses.

Users sign up to Fresh Training and then select the Executive Education course(s) they want. There are 4 types of course:

  • Business Courses
  • Business Skills
  • Business Tools
  • Professional Development

Business Courses - the seven pillars

There are 7  business areas and 4 levels of learning.   The courses are both progressive and integrated allowing learners to select either a breadth of knowledge (covering all 7 business discipline) or choose to develop a deeper understanding of a specific discipline.  We call the 7 business areas or discipline the 7 pillars.

There are many different business disciplines, subject and even facilities within a University.  We have combined a number of subjects into our pillars.  These pillars provide the core elements that are generically needed to be an effective MBA and business leader.  The seven pillars are:

  1. Strategy and Complexity
  2. Finance and Accounting
  3. Leadership and Change
  4. Marketing
  5. Operations
  6. Organisational Behaviour
  7. Innovation & Information

The 4 levels of course are introduction, foundation, effective and masterclass.

Strategy and Complexity

The Strategy and Complexity Pillar includes the Strategy, Planning and Our Complex World .  Strategy covers the management of the different types of strategy.  Planning covers strategic, business and marketing planning. Our Complex Worlds section introduces economics and looks at globalisation.

Finance and Accounting

The Finance and Accounting Pillar covers both financial and management accounts.  It covers financial analysis, corporate finance global financial strategy.  It integrates with a number of financial business skills (how to write a budget), and financial models (costing tools, budget and ratio analysis tools).

Leadership and Change

The Leadership and Change Pillar focuses on Leadership (both transformational and transactional), the different styles of leader (which integrates with Organisational Behaviour) and how leadership effects Change Management.  The Change Management section identifies core principles and skills needed to lead successful change.

Marketing

The Marketing Pillar introduces the breadth and depth of marketing and how it integrates with strategy, business planning and operations.  It starts with the foundation of marketing and its various components.  It then looks at how to develop marketing strategies, a marketing plan and how to integrate the detail of marketing actions.

Operations

The Operations Pillar covers generic operations (The way in which a company's delivery of its products and services).  It explains how business processes control the quality of a company's products.

Organisational Behaviour

The Organisational Behaviour Pillar looks at personality preferences and how individuals and organisations interact through personality types.  It introduces psychometrics and explains how these tools can make a significant impact of an organisation's performance.

Innovation and Information

The Innovation and Information Pillar identifies the critical importance of information, how to create it and how best to utilise technology to manage it.  Innovation looks at ways of embracing innovation and how to manage the vast array of rapidly changing technologies.

Business Skills

Pocket MBA Business Skills courses build on the knowledge gained from our business courses.  They explain how to practically apply theoretical knowledge.   The courses provide a How To Guide for each skill.  They also identify which business tools should be used and  also provide templates (Model business plans etc.).

Business Tools

Pocket MBA Business Tools provide clear, consistent  information about the business tools we recommend in both our business skills and business courses.   The tools provide the information in three steps:

  • Step 1 - An explanation of what the tool is used for, its objective and the results you can achieve when the tools are used effectively.
  • Step 2 - How to use the tools (and templates)
  • Step 3 - A case study with a completed example

Professional Development

Whilst the business skills focus on functional skills, professional development looks at the personal skills needed to have a successful career.  These courses cover topics such as 'Effective Presentation Skills', 'Communication Skills', or 'Personal Efficiency and Influencing Skills.
